Benjamin Hallett
(baptised London 3 May 1713; d p1753)
Sopranino Recorder
f” Hz 415,3 (“octave flute”)
Probably apprentice, together with T. Cahusac, to J.J. Schuchart ; by 1736 ratepayer ; 1748 took Anthony Bigs as apprentice, when listed as ‘flute maker’; 1749 took Thomas Ryan as apprentice; 1753 recorded as ‘poor’ by rate-collector. His son Benjamin (b1741) became famous as a child virtuoso on cello and flute
The original instrument is part of the Frans Brüggen collection. Made entirely of ivory, it is kept in a pouch lined with red velvet.
F.G. Morgan has measured the flute and his design is included in the publication “The Recorder Collection of Frans Brüggen” published by Zen-On Music.
The original flute is in f “with a pitch close to 412 Hz even if its pitch is extremely flexible.
To make this tool usable at 415.3 Hz, the internal bore has been slightly modified without changing the characteristics of the voicing. We have also added to the double holes for the bottom two notes.
The recorder, therefore, manages to keep intact the sound qualities of the original instrument that is characterised by an extraordinary response allowing the player to play the most difficult passages of its literature.
